Now Theres Even Better Value Available. Steve Ghosley ReportsThe chunky Peugeot 307 has been with us now since 2001 and still retains a relatively new and edgy look. Yet thats not enough to maintain strong sales. Hence the importance of added value special edition models like the 307 X-Line we look at here. With cars like this, providing that customers would have specified the additional equipment included anyway, they cant lose. The 307 X-line is basically an enhanced entry-level model with prices starting at £10,995 - the same as the base Style trim level. The X-line is available in both three and five-door body styles but does not include the larger SW variant in its repertoire. For both body styles the customer can choose between a 1.6-litre petrol engine and a 2. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value 0-litre HDi 90bhp diesel unit. Additionally, for the three-door version only, there is an option of a 1.4-litre petrol powerplant. Standard equipment is liberally loaded into this 307 variant, with features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, remote central locking and variable speed power steering. The additional extras there to entice you into buying the X-line version include 15-inch alloy wheels, manual air-conditioning, a CD-player, fully colour-coded exterior trim and special X-line carpet mats. For an entry-level model, this really is a small car that comes laden with big car features. On the road, its all very smooth and easy if not quite as sharp as some enthusiasts might like. Everything feels nice to use steering, throttle, brakes, switchgear. For an entry-level model, the X-line belies its modest status and feels much more up-market than it really is. "For an entry-level model the X-line belies its modest status and feels much more up-market than it really is"Fiddling with the details is a luxury afforded only to those whove got the fundamentals right and, with the 307, Peugeot can count themselves amongst this elite group. The sleek lines of the 307 disguise the fact that its the tallest car in the sector. Only the slightly awkward rear view betrays the Peugeots loftiness, and this helps contribute to making the 307 one of the biggest cars in its class, specifically in terms of head and legroom. Another side effect of the high roof and cab forward design is the biggest windscreen of any family hatchback. Its a serious piece of glazing, a flush pane that soars higher than expected, giving the interior an airy feel. Peugeot have paid great attention to the way that cars are typically used. Step from a 307 into a ten year-old car and apart from the claustrophobic feel, the first thing youll notice is that theres nowhere to put your take away, nowhere to store an atlas, not enough space in the glove compartment, nowhere to store anything out of sight of prying eyes and nowhere you could conceivably place a bottle. The 307 addresses all of these problems, ingeniously offering enough room in the cavernous front door bins to carry a 1. 5-litre bottle and building in lessons learnt from years of MPV production such as sliding underseat storage trays. It even features cargo nets in the hatch to stop luggage from looking like its been on a spin cycle after spirited driving. Other thoughtful applications include a boot, which automatically locks when you pull away, protecting the contents from opportunistic thieves while stopped in traffic, and door linings that are fitted with reinforced cowlings that shield the lock elements. The 307 is tightly screwed together, and uses a high grade of plastics, giving a subjective impression of quality to the interior. Many will feel that the interior perhaps lacks the visual drama of the exterior styling, and its a fair point. Nevertheless, ergonomics are sound and the car will be easy on your conscience too, with over 90% of its volume by weight being recyclable or recoverable. The 307 even utilises environmentally friendly constituent parts, such as mud flaps made from what were once polypropylene bottles and soundproofing that uses recycled textiles. The Peugeot 307 X-line Special Edition does offer good value for money despite being an entry-level model. It helps of course that the basic package is right already. Steve Walker ReportsWhen it comes to saving the planet, most of us are brimful of good intentions but if the environmentalist road proves overly difficult or costly, its all too tempting to get back in our V8 gas-guzzlers and head for that six-lane bypass. In the end, people need the right incentives to go green. Car manufacturers have made cars cleaner but would the changes have been as brisk if EU legislation wasnt forcing their hands? Motorists are choosing more environmentally-friendly vehicles but would they do the same if fuel prices and the taxation burden didnt make cleaner cars cheaper to run? Peugeots 407 X-Line works on the opposite premise. Heres a special edition that incentivises the less green option. To understand the X-Line special editions place in the wider Peugeot 407 range, you need to understand the FAP particulate emission filter. Modern diesel engines like the common-rail injection units in Peugeots 407 have cleaned up their act considerably compared to the smog-belching oil burners of yesteryear but with the EU emissions regulations growing ever tighter, theres always room for improvement. Peugeot developed FAP technology to make their engines cleaner still. The system retains particles that would otherwise have passed out in the exhaust gasses and incinerates them, significantly cutting harmful emissions. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The fitment of FAP filters also renders the 407s 1.6HDi and 2.0HDi engines compliant with the Euro IV emissions regulations, so company car users are waived the 3% BIK tax supplement levied on non-Euro IV diesels. The key point here is that if you buy a Peugeot 407 diesel from the standard range, it will come fitted with the FAP filter technology but the X-Line special edition models do without it. Both of the 407s diesel engines are available in the X-Line, so buyers have to make a choice between the 110bhp 1.6HDi version priced at £17,550 and the 136bhp 2.0HDi model at £18,450. Theres also an automatic gearbox that can be specified with the more powerful unit for a £1,000 premium and the extra carrying capacity of an X-Line SW estate can be yours for an extra £1,100. The X-line special edition is based on the mid-range SE specification so equipment levels look fairly promising. A CD stereo, front fog lights, alloy wheels, electric windows and folding door mirrors, tyre pressure sensors, automatic headlights and automatic wipers all feature on the saloon with the SW adding a panoramic glass roof and an opening tailgate window. On top of these SE features, the X-line delivers a 6 CD autochanger and what Peugeot refer to as a rear parking aid. This isnt a massive rear view mirror or a pair of X-ray specs but a row of sensors on the back bumper linked to a bleeper which warns of impending collisions. "Peugeot are, in effect, offering customers a choice between their FAP particulate filter technology and their parking assistance technology"The value proposition here is an interesting one. The non-FAP X-line models are priced at a £300 premium over their FAP-equipped SE counterparts. Take a gander at the options list, however, and youll find that the CD autochanger is valued at £300 so it effectively cancels out the price premium. The rear parking aid system, meanwhile costs £250 as an option. Peugeot are, in effect, offering customers a choice between their FAP particulate filter technology and their parking assistance technology, give or take £50. Now, £250 here or there isnt going to make a whole lot of difference when were talking about an £18,000 car but customers have to make a decision on some basis or another. The politically correct thing to do would be to forgo the parking aid and get an FAP-equipped SE model, paying £300 to secure a CD autochanger from the options list. The planet would be edged that tiny fraction further toward salvation and youd reverse park in silence knowing you were doing your bit for the environment but, for private buyers, theres no real financial incentive to do this. If we take the 110bhp 1.6-litre HDi as an example, the non-FAP engine produces 145g/km of CO2 and so does the unit with FAP. Whichever one you choose, youll be in exactly the same road tax band. What FAP does do is slash the engines particulate emissions from 0. 046g/km to 0.005g/km while also cutting nitrogen oxide output from 0.307g/km to 0.173g/km. Carbon Monoxide is also cut significantly and together, all these reductions help to make the FAP HDi engines Euro IV-compliant. This is great for company car users who save 3% on their tax bill but private buyers get no benefit from this aside from the satisfaction of taking the environmentally friendly option. The two diesel engines in the X-Line will appeal to quite different buyers, mainly due to the significant differences in the performance on offer. The 1. 6 HDi is, after all, over two yawning seconds slower to sixty (13.1s) and 10mph slower flat out (110mph). Many will think that worth the model-for-model £1,100 premium that Peugeot require from X-Line buyers wishing to trade up from the smaller engine, even though theres a 10g/km penalty in emissions (155g/km for the 2.0 HDi as opposed to 145g/km for the 1. 6). The fuel consumption figures produced by the two engines (an average of 51.1mpg for the 1.6 as opposed to 48mpg for the 2. 0 HDi) are hardly different. Most people will say that theyre concerned about the environment and rightly so but there are usually incentives attached to the environmentalist choices we make. Peugeots 407 X-Line actually encourages buyers to take the less green option, forgoing the FAP filter in exchange an autochanger and some parking assistance. Company car users will turn their noses up it because the Euro IV status of the standard 407s FAP-equipped engines will save them money but private buyers will have some soul searching to do.
