This torque is available very uniformly, since even at low engine speeds (2,000 rpm), it attains 140 Nm, or 88 % of its maximum capacity, thereby ensuring a wide operating range. This engine’s technology, very different from that of the 1.6 THP despite the large number of common components, is a genuine first at this level of engine capacity. In addition to its variable timing system for the inlet and exhaust camshafts, a variable lift system on the inlet valves allows their maximum stroke to be adjusted gradually according to the position of the accelerator pedal. The use of these two VVT systems (Variable Valve Timing or continuously variable timing) combined with the variable inlet valve lift system makes it possible, to improve the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine (developed from the BMW Group’s VALVETRONIC concept). This then significantly reduce the fuel consumption (particularly in partial load conditions), and therefore CO2 emissions, but also improves engine response and flexibility. This engine thus provides the 308 for instance with good level of dynamic performance while reducing fuel consumption to only 6.7 litres per 100 km in the combined cycle (i.e. a gain of more than 10 % compared to a 307 equipped with the old 1.6 litre 110 bhp engine).VTi range: 1.6l VTi 120 bhp available on 207 and on 308,1.4l VTi 95 bhp available on 207 and on 308. Terms and conditions Site Map Warning International Corporate Sales PSA Group Investors Diplomates Museum Newsletter WebTV || Yahoo! Expert Rating: With the advanced 1.4-litre VTi engine installed the Peugeot 207 is a fine product but is 95bhp enough to give it a energetic edge? Steve Walker reports... 1.4 litres used to constitute a generous helping of engine for a supermini. 1,400cc cars would appear in the middle of the product range, sitting above weedier 1,200cc and even 1,000cc alternatives, they might even have been marketed as sporty little numbers only one step below the range-topping hot hatchbacks, but a look at Peugeot's latest 207 line-up will reveal that 1.4 is as small as things get. The reasons for this change are manifold but in the end, it all comes down to weight. The fact is that our superminis aren't as 'mini' as they used to be so our expectations of a model with 1.4-litre power have to be managed accordingly. Or do they? The 207 1.4 VTi has advanced technology up its sleeve so can it deliver a pleasant surprise? It's true that the Peugeot 207 is available with a bog standard 8-valve 1.4-litre engine but the 1.4 VTi isn't it. This unit has been developed by Peugeot in partnership with BMW and is also found in the German marque's entry-level MINI models. With Peugeot's reputation for producing excellent small cars and BMW's for world-leading engineering, the 207 1.4 VTi comes with quite a pedigree. 95bhp is a respectable amount to squeeze from a 1,400cc capacity powerplant and the engineers behind this unit have done it through the use of variable valve timing technology. This means that the engine actually adapts the parameters of its combustion process according to the way the 207 is being driven. Put the hammer down and it works to optimise performance but tread more softly on the throttle and it switches into a mode that maximises economy. In practice, it makes for a free-revving engine and produces good refinement at the low to middle end of the rev range. What it can't do is defy the laws of physics and with the 207 weighing in at nearly 1,300kg, this car is never going to set the road alight with the 95bhp at its disposal. The 0-60mph sprint takes 12.8s and the top speed is 115mph. By contrast, the MINI which uses the same engine weighs 1,135kg and can get to 60mph in 10. 9s, evidence of the impact that less weight can have. The advantage of the Peugeot's mass is its composure and the big car feel on the road. It's an unhurried, comfortable car to drive that's great on longer journeys and takes to twisty back roads with relish thanks to its well-judged suspension. As long as you don't expect too much pace from the engine, the 5-speed gearbox is the only real drawback. The slack action isn't what you want in a nimble supermini and it lets the rest of the driving package down a bit."This unit has been developed by Peugeot in partnership with BMW"The 207 represented a big improvement over the 206 in terms of perceived quality. The materials in the cabin look and feel sturdy with no obvious flaws in terms of the way it all fits together. The lower specification models lack some of the fancy detailing you get as you ascend the range but the interior of a 207 is generally a pleasant place to be. Rear legroom is not as good as in some rivals, although there's a trade-off the shape of a 310-litre boot capacity and the design of the standard ventilation control panel looks a touch dated. The styling themes that have gradually rolled out across the Peugeot model range are nothing if not distinctive and as with anything so wilfully out of the ordinary, the look of the 207 may not be to everyone's taste. For the uninitiated, the 207's main distinguishing features are those elongated headlamps that stretch back from the nose into the front wings and the huge grinning grille below, its teeth braced by a dark central bumper. Around the back, things are less extrovert but the overall look has real purpose about it. The 95bhp 1.4-litre VTi engine sits below the 120bhp 1. 6-litre VTi in the 207 hierarchy. It's priced from £10,525 in S trim with the three-door bodystyle but buyers wanting to jazz theirs up a bit can upgrade to the three-door Sport or five-door SE Premium models at £11,225 and £12,425 respectively. The 1.6-litre VTi engine is usefully quicker but £700 more expensive and is only offered in the plusher two trim levels. Even in S guise, the 207 features air-conditioning, a trip computer, a CD stereo, remote central locking, front fog lights and a comprehensive safety specification including curtain airbags, which goes some way to explaining where all the extra weight comes from. Superminis have been getting bigger and bigger over recent years and the 207 is at the far end of that evolutionary scale. It's a substantial vehicle with features and systems that would have been unheard of in a supermini just a few years back. It sacrifices some of the liveliness and immediacy you get with lighter-weight cars in exchange for the comfort and refinement of a larger one and it asks a lot of a 1.4-litre 95bhp engine as a knock-on effect of its bulk. We are seeing signs that the unstoppable growth of the supermini has reached a peak with models like the latest versions of the Mazda2 and the Ford Fiesta actually lighter than their predecessors so supermini buyers could be faced with a choice between the two schools of design, each with perfectly valid features to recommend it. Drive the 1.4-litre VTi 207 in a measured fashion and the variable valve timing technology will help it get somewhere close to the official combined cycle economy figure or 46.3mpg. That looks like a strong performance until you notice that the 1. 6-litre VTi achieves exactly the same consumption and identical emissions of 145g/km. It means that there's a strong case for making the step-up to the car 120bhp car which has superior performance and with very similar running costs. Insurance groups are 4E for the 1.4 and 7E for the 1.6 so there is a saving to be made there. There was a time when buyers looking for feisty performance and an engaging drive would have found exactly what they were looking for in a 1.4-litre Peugeot supermini. Today, that isn't really the case. What you do get with a 207 1.4 VTi is a very comfortable and mature feeling product with strong refinement and a host of modern features. The 95bhp engine can sometimes get swamped by the weight of the 207 and its popularity is likely to be hampered by the existence of the 120bhp 1. 6-litre VTi engine that achieves identical economy and emissions for only a little bit more money. The 207 1.4 VTi makes most sense in S trim, a level where the 1.6-litre VTi alternative isn't available. As a capable supermini all-rounder covering all the important bases, the car looks good but you do find yourself wishing for a bit more power to make the most of what is a highly accomplished chassis. The sloppy gearbox, 'distinctive' frontal styling and some questionable interior plastics notwithstanding, the Peugeot is hard to fault and it makes a great choice for buyers seeking a safe, well-equipped and affordable supermini.Facts At A Glance CAR: Peugeot 207 1.4 VTi PRICES: £10,525 - £12,425 INSURANCE GROUPS: 4E CO2 EMISSIONS: 145g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 12.8s / Max Speed 115mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 38.4mpg / (extra urban) 58.4mpg / (combined) 46.3mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBFD and EBA. An automatic gearbox is optional with the 2.0 HDI, but for our money the more powerful petrol engine is the pick of the range. Trim levels give high levels of standard equipment, and top-end models have all the luxuries and latest gadgets. Peugeot dealers are generally happy to haggle, and now that the 3008 has been on sale for a while, you should be able to get a decent discount. Watch out, too, for low-rate finance schemes and other incentives; as large mainstream retailers, Peugeot dealers have room for manoeuvre. Peugeot's family hatch dynasty continues but has this model got enough to challenge the class leaders? Steve Walker reports...
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRForget fossil fuels, our supplies of good names to call cars could run out well before the oil does bringing the industry to a crashing halt. The last hundred years or so has seen a fair few motorcars produced and between them, they've used up most of the decent car names. Modern manufacturers are lumbered with more models than ever and a dwindling pool of acceptable things to call them.
To get around the problem, some marques take a short-termist approach, employing focus groups and teams of creatives to don hard hats and mine the ether for natty new monikers. For every Ford Mustang they turn up though, there's a Mazda Bongo Friendee. It can be a risky business. Peugeot takes more of a conservationist approach that's second in sustainability only to marques which recycle their old names wholesale. By devising and sticking to a sensible naming strategy, the French marque limits consumption of valuable new names. Eventually, even Peugeot's resource will be depleted but we're only just on the 308, the first new model of the '8 generation' so there's a good few years in it yet.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRA big interior and an economical engine range are strong points for Peugeot's 308 family hatch. The styling is striking rather than pretty but build quality looks strong and there's a high-class feel to the car's cabin.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRAs the 307's innings drew to a close, everyone had a pretty good idea of what was coming in terms of a replacement. That it would be called 308 was nailed on. The predictable Peugeot nomenclature is a core element of the brand and nobody really wanted to see a Peugeot named after some nomadic east African tribe, the Greek goddess of cheese or the Hawaiian word for sparrow. Most people could also have made an educated guess on what the 308 was going to look like, the Peugeot family face having spread to all corners of the model range with its elongated feline headlamps and that dentist's chair gape. A surprise the 308 was not but Peugeot is confident that it has a shock or two in store for its family hatch rivals.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRThere are numerous engine options for persons interested in a 308 to mull over. The entry-level petrol contingent employs Peugeot's VTi technology using variable valve timing and lift to adapt the combustion process according to the demands being placed on the engine by the driver. The system gives optimum performance when you want it and improved economy when you don't. The 1.4-litre unit produces 95bhp while the 1.6-litre alternative has 120bhp and is available with a four-speed automatic gearbox in lieu of the standard five-speed manual. The next step up is the turbocharged 1.6-litre engine THP. In the 308, this powerplant develops 156bhp or 200bhp and even the less powerful model is capable of covering the 0-60mph sprint in 8.8s. The diesel range consists of Peugeot's excellent HDi common-rail diesel engines. There's a 1.6-litre unit offered in 90 or 110bhp form and a 2.0-litre 136bhp option topping the range that will get from a standstill to 60mph in 10.1s.
There's a wide choice of different transmission options, including a six-speed manual gearbox, a six-speed EGC semi-automatic unit and a full six-speed automatic fitted to the flagship 2.0 HDi 136 model. The 110bhp 1.6-litre diesel unit is also available with Peugeot's economical EGC six-speed automatic transmission.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRThe 308 inherits the taller than average roofline that the 307 used to good effect in creating a roomy and airy interior but by shaving 12mm from its height while growing in terms of both length (by 74mm) and width (by 85mm), it achieves a far more dynamic stance than the old car. The long front overhang of the 308 adds to this impression, creating a wedge-shaped profile that brings a further sporty element to the car's shape. Those familiar with the Peugeot 207 supermini will find plenty they recognise in the 308 but the key differences on the larger car are the prominent V-shaped bonnet that extends down from the base of the A-pillars on a raised plain and the huge oblong foglights. The rear of the 308 has more of a bulbous look to it, helping to maximise luggage space that runs to 430 litres and can be extended to 1,398 litres by folding the rear seats. If you need more room, there's an SW estate version with up to 2,149 litres of space.
The interior takes a sober but classy approach. It feels notably more upmarket than inside of the 307 and even more spacious. The higher specification models in the range are embellished with liberal use of chrome and all derivatives benefit from expensive looking plastics with the lighter colour options proving particularly eye-catching. The middle section of the dash slopes down into the centre console bringing its controls closer to the driver and creating a snug cockpit effect but you sit a long way back from the base of the steeply raked windscreen with a huge expanse of dashboard to look out across. This, combined with the 308's long front overhang, may present problems when manoeuvring but the A-pillars, a constant impediment to the driver's view in the 307, appear much thinner for improved visibility.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRMost buyers choose between five-door hatch or SW estate bodystyles but there's also an attractive CC metal folding roof coupe convertible to consider. A wide range of trim levels are available kicking off with the Urban then running on to the S, SR, Sport, SE and GT models. Equipment on all variants runs to power steering, remote control central locking with deadlocks, electric front windows, a steering column adjustable for reach and rake, a CD player, passenger / driver seat height adjustment, a trip computer and electrically operated door mirrors. Bodyshape choice currently runs between three and five-door hatchbacks, plus an SW estate version with the option of a third row of seats.
Peugeot has armed the 308 with a wide selection of technological curiosities to help it battle the family hatchback sector's big hitters. You'll need to dip into the options list to get the bi-xenon directional headlamps and the Lane Departure Warning System (which gives you the electronic equivalent of a dig in the ribs from your better half if you wander across a white line without indicating), but a lot of the safety kit is standard. Seven airbags are included and five-door buyers can add to this count with rear side airbags if they want to. There's also ABS with EBFD and EBA (or anti-lock brakes with brakeforce distribution and brake assistance in laymans' language).
The family hatch sector is notoriously tough to make headway in. The 307 looked good at launch but was quickly overtaken by the usual suspects so Peugeot will be looking for the 308 to show some staying power. To do so, it will need to get chosen on merit over the likes of Volkswagen's Golf, Ford's Focus, Vauxhall's Astra and Fiat's Bravo.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRPeugeot is proud of the fact that some of the best aerodynamics in the sector have been achieved with the 308. A drag coefficient of 0.29 will mean little to most buyers but the resultant the slippery styling and fuel economy advantage should strike a chord. The greenest engine choice is the FAP particulate filter-equipped 1.6-litre HDi which gets an excellent 60.1 miles from each gallon on the combined cycle. It also dips under the 120g/km barrier for CO2 emissions. The 136bhp 2.0-litre HDi, also with a particulate filter to clean up its act, returns a creditable 51.4mpg while the 156bhp turbocharged petrol engine lags in behind with 42.2mpg which is still far from disgraceful.
PEUGEOT 308 HATCHBACK 1.4 VTI URBAN 5DRPeugeot will be hoping that the first model in their '8' dynasty makes a big impression. The 308's styling is highly distinctive with the controversial front end treatment that's now evident right across the manufacturer's model range taking pride of place. In the engine room is a selection of proven units that have already seen service in the 207 amongst other models and the interior ups quality standards from the 307 while retaining its impressive spaciousness.
