6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: New Reviews Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor The Outdoor has an impressive load area, but is less favourable for passengers. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £10,995 - £9,995 For : Well designed load area, excellent ride and handling Against : Tight fit for four adults, built quality doesn’t justify list price DrivingThe Outdoor’s raised suspension hasn’t seriously affected the standard SW’s tidy handling. There is a little more body roll in tight corners, but the Outdoor is nevertheless nimble and involving. Badly rutted roads don’t pose a problem, either, with the smooth-riding 207 doing a good job of keeping its occupants comfortable. Front three-quarter visibility is also good – a useful safety aid. The 1.6-litre petrol engine is OK, but we prefer the 1.6-litre HDi turbodiesel. Out test 110 variant proved civilised and powerful, though the five-speed gearbox remains slack and sloppy. MarketplaceTwo things differentiate the Outdoor from a normal 207 SW. It rides higher, and there are chunky off-roader styling cues. The grey mouldings along the wheelarches, door bottoms and bumpers are very prominent, and the gaping grille isn’t the prettiest either, though the rear end looks good. Don’t be mistaken by the off-road looks though, for the Peugeot lacks four-wheel-drive. The real point of it is to provide a little more choice and fun for small estate car buyers. Skoda is clearly thinking along similar lines with its Roomster Scout variant. Peugeot offers just the single trim level comes with a choice of three engines – 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol, and a 1.6-litre HDi diesel in 90bhp and 110bhp guise. OwningReal thought has gone into the Outdoor’s luggage area. The tailgate glass opens separately, while loading heavy objects is simple as the sill is a low 545mm from the ground. Floor runners and a shallow lip make it easy to push boxes in, while tie hooks and a net mean your cargo won’t slide about (and there is an extra six litres of storage underneath the false floor). Folding the 70:30 slit seat is straightforward, though you have to remove the flimsy parcel shelf and ceiling-mounted luggage retaining net first. However, occupants will feel short-changed for space. If a six-foot driver sets the seat for them, rear passengers will find themselves squashed, while the footwell is cramped with no clutch footrest. Build quality doesn’t feel as sturdy as it should, either – though the Outdoor is very well-equipped. The full-length panoramic glass roof is also impressive. Retained values look good too, and the Outdoor proved reasonably economical in our hands – though the insurance ratings seem a touch high compared to rivals. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests Peugeot Partner Tepee Outdoor We see if the more expensive choice here makes greater sense. July 2008 Since its launch in 1998, the Partner has always lived in the shadow of its Berlingo twin. Despite offering the same versatile and practical package, the Peugeot lost out in the sales race due to higher pricing. Now the second generation has arrived, the firm is still insisting on charging more for its version. But it believes the step up in quality will lure buyers away from traditional family models.Although the Multispace and Tepee are the same from the base of the windscreen back, the latter has greater road presence, thanks in part to its gaping front grille. Our top-spec Outdoor version is further set apart by chunky black plastic body cladding and a 10mm increase in ride height – these changes give it the look of a junior SUV. Also standard on the Partner – but an option on the Multispace – are neat roof rails. These can be mounted lengthways or width ways for maximum flexibility. Inside, the cabin is more restrained than the Citroen’s, and looks upmarket. Subtle colours cover the seats and flashes of chrome have been applied to the dash. But none of this means the Peugeot is any less practical. With exactly the same dimensions and cubbyholes, the Partner makes an equally convincing family holdall. Our car’s flexibility was further enhanced by the £550 optional Zenith roof. Running along the centre of the ceiling, it provides extra overhead storage – 170 litres – and has a built-in air freshener. Citroen offers the same kit in the shape of its Modutop set-up.So, if there’s no increase in versatility or space, how can Peugeot justify charging an extra £2,930? One look at the specification list provides part of the answer. Air-con, cruise control and alloys are all standard, while side and curtain airbags give the Tepee a safety boost over its cheaper rival. But the biggest incentive for digging deeper into your pockets lies under the bonnet. While the Partner uses the same 1.6-litre HDi turbodiesel, tweaks take the power to 108bhp – an increase of 20bhp. At the track, this translated into a decisive advantage, with 0-60mph taking nearly three seconds less, at 12.1 seconds. You really feel the benefit on the road, though, where muscular mid-range acceleration makes the Peugeot a more relaxing proposition than the Multispace. It’s worth noting that higher-spec Citroens also feature this unit.Despite the raised suspension, the Peugeot was more capable on twisty roads. Better body control, strong grip and a composed and supple ride mean the Tepee is fun, even though the steering lacks feel and weight. So, the Peugeot has the edge in terms of driving, performance and equipment. The question is whether all this compensates for that significant step up in price. Does the high-spec approach of range-topping Peugeot make more sense? AT A GLANCE: The Peugeot wins thanks to its better kit, stronger engine and composed driving experience. It’s more expensive than the Berlingo, but with such a versatile cabin, it still represents great value compared to a similarly equipped family hatch. SCORES Styling: Interior: Driving: Costs: Green: ECONOMY Once you’ve got over the higher initial outlay, the Peugeot should prove less costly to run. Fuel economy of 37.1mpg is respectable in isolation, and good when compared to the slower Citroen. As with the Berlingo, the low CO2 emissions keep the tax rating down for private buyers, although company users pay more due to the higher list price. Servicing isn’t as expensive, but the 12,500-mile maintenance intervals on both cars could mean frequent trips to the dealer. And while residuals have yet to be calculated, the Tepee shouldn’t depreciate as heavily due to its more desirable standard kit tally. - Advertisement - Company Website | Media Information | Contact Us | Privacy Notice | Subs Info | Voucher Codes | SitemapOur Other Websites: The First Post | Custom PC | Evo | IT Pro | IT Pro India | MacUser | Men's Fitness | Micro Mart | PC Pro | bit-tech | Know Your Mobile | Octane | Expert Reviews | Channel Pro | Know Your Cell | Know Your Mobile India | iGizmo | Digital SLR Photography | Den of Geek | The Week | Computer Shopper | Dennis Communications | Magazines | Mobile Phone Deals | Competitions | Health & Fitness | CarBuyer © 2010 Dennis Publishing Limited. We review and road test the Peugeot Partner Teepee Outdoor HDi 110 for a week of mixed driving to see how practical this economical load lugger is. There are myriad reasons why people choose the cars they do. Economy, looks, performance, colour, vanity – the list goes on. But if your major consideration when you choose your vehicle is practicality then you won’t go very far wrong when you choose this particular offering from Peugeot – the Peugeot Partner Teepee Outdoor – because it is the perfect example of function over form.
The Peugeot Partner Tepee is Peugeot’s version of the very popular Citroen Berlingo. Our test car is the top of the heap Partner Tepee Outdoor HDi 110 with bolt-on rufty-tufty body plastics – all the better for tackling the urban jungle – a raised ride height and underbody protection.
The Partner Tepee is basically a van with windows – albeit a very well fitted one – and when you start to drive it the advantages of these van- like qualities become obvious. The sitting position is higher than in a car – which I actually prefer in anything other than something designed to perform – and there’s lots of headroom. The sliding rear passenger doors limit careless knocks in car parks caused by over exuberant children, the all round visibility is great and the van wing mirrors make reversing a doddle.
As with the current crop of Peugeot’s the Tepee is very easy to drive. This particular model is fitted with the adequately perky 1.6 HDi 107bhp diesel – a version of the same engine you’ll find in the MINI – and the torquey nature of the engine makes you feel like you’re nipping along very nicely – far better around town than the 0-60mph of 12.5 seconds would suggest.
Even 75mph motorway cruises are French-comfy, wind noise is acceptable and road noise not too intrusive, although some surfaces do elicit some odd tyre noises which the cavernous cabin seems to amplify. Irritating rather than objectionable and probably just a betrayal of the Teepee’s van roots
Getting any sort of hustle on around windier country roads – thanks to the soft ride and the ‘which way are my wheels pointing?’ light steering – is a slightly hairier affair (and something of a giggle) and your passengers might have something to say as they hang on dutifully. But you will be more than a little grateful for that soft French ride and no-feel steering as the Peugeot floats over badly pot-holed home counties roads.
For a family with children, a dog or two, and all the associated paraphernalia this Peugeot will fit the bill. There is ample seating for five and there are cup holders and cubbyholes all over the place
“…you will be more than a little grateful for that soft French ride and no-feel steering as the Peugeot floats over badly pot-holed home counties roads.”
It is obvious that a lot of work and thought has been put into this car – on the practical front if not the stylish one. The practical nature of the car is also obvious in the fixtures and fittings, the use of hard plastics – for ease of cleaning – and hard wearing fabrics point towards the hard work this interior will be subject to. Out test car is fitted with Air con and SatNav – the latter being allied to a decent sound unit – so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be looked after and comfortable while all the hard work goes on around you.
The everyday practical value of this car is further realised when you come to carrying anything other than passengers. My mob may be the exception, but we have mattresses, beds, wardrobes, garden rubbish and numerous other odd shaped items to collect or dispose of, and this wonderfully practical Peugeot can cope with almost anything.
The boxy shape gives 624 litres of space – easily enough for the family with luggage or a couple of bikes – with the seats all in place. There’s even hanging space above the passengers’ heads for skis or surf boards – after all, you want to keep your skis and surfboards dry – but with the seats all tucked away there are 2,800 litres of usable space, which should cover most eventualities. Probably even moving home – at a pinch.

Stylish and eye-catching, it is also comfortable and practical. And it's reasonably affordable at £14,595.That glass roof means that regardless of where you are sitting, you can enjoy the light that pours into the vehicle. It makes you realise how dark it can be in the cockpit of other vehicles. Before you think you might fry on some occasions, the glass has several layers with different tints to ensure a thermal heat transmission of just 14 per cent, while maintaining a light transmission of 22 per cent. There is also a very effective electric sunblind. Handily, the motor for this is controlled by a switch located on the centre console, near the hand brake to make it accessible to both the front and back seat occupants. Also, thanks to the overall design, and depending on the position of the sun blind, it also assists in reducing the interior noise levels. There's another plus about the specific profile of the glass panoramic roof. The fact that it slopes further at the back compared with its sister hatchback - a vehicle with which it shares much of its structure - improves the rear headroom. In the front, there is a 17mm gain in interior space. In the back, a new arrangement of the seats raises them 20mm compared with the hatchback. This creates what Peugeot calls an 'ampitheatre' effect, improving the passengers' forward view. It also increases the rear headroom by some 24mm. There's also additional legroom. So for a couple with a growing family including teenagers, like myself, all that additional space is worth taking note of.The 207 SW incorporates this in a body which looks good, too.It shares the front design with the hatchback, while at the back, the true signature of the 207 SW is the completely red rear light assemblies with their smooth lenses and diode effect with metallised segmenting of the five lighting functions.A useful feature at the back is that the vehicle offers access to the load space in two ways. The tailgate with its visible hinges can be opened independently of the tailgate. It is operated by means of a release button next to the one for opening the tailgate. You can also operate it by remote control. It is surprisingly useful, allowing you to place items on the parcel shelf without disturbing the contents of the boot.Engine wise, the 1.6-litre HDi does its job very capably and a diesel particulate filter system makes it particularly environmentally friendly.FAST FACTSPeugeot 207 SW Outdoor HDi 90 5drPrice: £14,595Mechanical: 90bhp, 1,560cc, 4cyl diesel engine driving front wheels via 5spd manual gearboxMax speed: 108mph0-62mph: 13.8 secsCombined mpg: 60.1Insurance group: 6CO2 emissions: 125g/kmBiK rating: 18%Warranty: 3yrs/ 60,000 miles, 3yrs paint, 12yrs anti-rust Words: Andy Richards Keywords: peugeot, 207 Rate this article: Login to rate this article...
