The SW's shape is so satisfying - the opinion of several friends rather than just myself - that I can't help wondering if this was the car Peugeot had in mind all along, with the saloon being a design afterthought even though it was introduced first. It also occurs to me that some people might buy the SW simply because it looks better than the four-door. The more likely reason, though, is the increased luggage space. The saloon manages 407 litres, but the SW starts at 430 litres and extends, if you fold the rear seats and cram the thing to roof level, to 1365 litres. There's a great deal of room for front-seat occupants too, but the folk in the rear don't get quite such a good deal. For me, the back seat accomodation is limited in terms of both legroom and headroom, which comes as a bit of a surprise in a car as large as the SW. It should be possible to carry four adults a very long way in considerable comfort, but only if none of them is much more than six feet tall. The car tested here is the SE Luxury Pack HDi 136. We'll get to the HDi 136 bit shortly, but first a word about the trim level. It's the middle one of five in the 407 SW range, the others being (in ascending order) S, SE, SV and Executive. The Luxury Pack adds leather/cloth trim, electric seats and rear parking sensors to the SE specification, which becomes as a result almost identical to that of the SV - the only differences are that the SV has velour trim and a CD autochanger. Reasonably enough, in their HDi 136 forms the two cars are priced identically, at £20,050. That's slightly more than they were when the SW range was introduced; since then, cruise control has become standard rather than optional on all 407s, which has led to a slight price increase and a step up in insurance rating from - in the case of the test car - Group 10 to Group 11. Our car also had a couple of options fitted. The metallic paint costs £325, and would probably be worth considering to keep up the residual value, while another £400 gets you the Security Pack which consists of rear side airbags, pyrotechnic rear seatbelts, side window sunblinds and laminated side windows. So, about that engine. It's the very familiar and very good two-litre HDi turbo diesel, providing in this application low noise levels, fine fuel economy and impressive mid-range pull. You can have it with a Tiptronic automatic transmission, but I quite liked the six-speed manual gearbox of the test car, which has a better shift quality than I've experienced in other Peugeots. The HDi makes the 407 a relaxing car to drive, and despite the temptation of the various petrol units and the less powerful but still useful 1.6-litre diesel, I suspect this is the engine I would choose for myself. I'm not so sure about the 17" alloy wheels, or more specifically the 215/55 tyres which clothe them. The 407 is not especially nimble, even when you take its size into account, and the low-profile rubber gives the chassis more work to do as bumps and humps in the road try to make their presence known to the driver and passengers. While there isn't much you can do about that, you can certainly make a big difference to the way the SW tackles twisting A roads, for example. It can waft over them very smoothly, but only if you work hard to make sure it does. If not, it lurches. This makes it a very good car for honing your driving skills, but for slightly more than £20,000 I'd rather some of the effort was being done for me. Overall, though, this is an impressive contender, with many genuine qualities lying beneath that handsome exterior. The popular Peugeot 505 model was thus replaced by two cars - the large family car 405, and the executive car 605. High equipment levels, a luxurious interior, a smooth ride, and exceptional handling were strong points for the 605. But Peugeot has always struggled to succeed with large cars outside France, and the 605 was no different. It was too similar in design and appearance to the smaller Peugeot 405 to command a price premium, while its dashboard also drew criticism for its uninspired design. Peugeot 605 Also like the XM, 605 suffered from grave build quality issues that resulted in a large number of breakdowns or malfunctions (particularly with the ambitious electrics), which severely damaged the car's reputation. It took Peugeot three years to improve these disappointing levels of quality.[citation needed] PSA Peugeot Citroën has not been able to address the "luxury-brand" issue effectively - the automobile market rewards such segmentation, by brands from one factory - like Lexus/Toyota, Acura/Honda, and Audi/Volkswagen. Consumers demand a certain exclusivity from luxury cars that commodity producers cannot provide. After the launch of the well-received Peugeot 406 in 1995, 605 sales dropped to near-insignificant levels, and the 605 was quietly dropped in 1999. Cars built after 1992 generally have good build quality and are often surprisingly good bargains on the second-hand market because the model's poor reputation keeps prices down. The 605's successor, the Peugeot 607, went into production in late 1999 and has been slightly more successful on the domestic and export markets. The end of 605 production spelled the end of "05" generation Peugeots in Europe after more than twenty years; this generation had started back in 1977 (UK market 1978) with the 305. The fuel-injected inline-4 was better received though it was criticised for lacking low- and mid-range punch, whereas the 170 hp (127 kW) V6 suffered from criticisms over poor fuel economy (mostly due to its design essentially dating from the late 1960s). The same issue affected the top-of-the range V6-24 version in spite of its all-new 24-valve cylinder head, though a top speed of 235 km/h (146 mph) made poor fuel economy more acceptable to generally well-heeled customers. The 2.1 turbo-diesel was widely regarded[according to whom?] as a good powertrain but was outclassed by the new direct-injection engines introduced in 1988 by Audi.[citation needed] A 2.0-liter (8-valve) turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine (150 bhp) was added in 1991 and provided good performance but proved unreliable. Later, a 2.5 turbodiesel (130 bhp) completed the diesel lineup, then the 2.1 was converted to direct injection. The “5 BY PEUGEOT” – a luxury saloon powered by Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology – will be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Perfectly balancing charisma with dynamic driving, the “5 BY PEUGEOT” sets a fresh, innovative benchmark for large touring car and saloon production. Design The “5 BY PEUGEOT” epitomises the new brand direction for Peugeot, combining Motion & Emotion. It is a timeless yet modern design, offering quality, performance and efficiency… surpassing all the demands of the luxury saloon segment. Style The concept car boasts sublime elegance with a smooth, uninterrupted profile and streamlined sides. Spectacular LED lights are highlighted by the use of illuminated surrounds that blend perfectly with the overall exterior body styling, while brushed-aluminium window surrounds and door handles add to the exterior style. Meanwhile, sturdy 19-inch wheel trims and exceptional interior design outline Peugeot’s strength and pedigree in developing luxury saloon vehicles. Drive The HYbrid4 technology – which will be seen in Peugeot’s 3008 in 2011 – ensures high levels of driving enjoyment and environmental commitment. The “5 BY PEUGEOT” has a 2.0 litre HDi FAP163 bhp diesel engine mounted at the front, combined with a 37 bhp electric motor at the rear. This provides power of up to 200 bhp. The concept car also features four-wheel drive, low fuel consumption of just 74.3mpg and emits 99 g/km of CO2… with zero emissions when the car is running in electric mode.
