Peugeot produce best-selling cars with similar ease.Their vehicles are so obviously winners - I'm sure other manufacturers must look on enviously and think "Why didn't we think of that."Take the 206. Peugeot has done a terrific job in keeping it looking sleek through the transition from hatchback to SW estate. The more you take in the lines, the more you appreciate how much work the design department has put in.There are eye-catching curves everywhere - even the roof rails are smart, and the doors have clearly been very carefully shaped.It's not only eye-catching, it's cleverly designed too. Peugeot describes the SW as "a car the size of a conventional hatchback, boasting the practicality of an estate".The SW takes up only a little more road than a conventional 206, but it's significantly taller and has generous luggage space. It may be a bit of a sweat to be comfortable while travelling long distances with family suitcases, but it coped easily with our family's weekly shop - no mean feat!One nice touch is that the rear window can be opened separately from the rest of the tailgate, so you can have awkward loads sticking out if necessary. However, it is not flawless. I do have misgivings about the rear window being so very heavily tinted.True, it makes it very difficult to see into the luggage area, which is no doubt good for security. The only problem is that when you're sitting in the car it's also very difficult to see what's behind you. It's not too bad during the day, but at night I found clear vision quite a strain.I also wasn't keen on the side window adjuster buttons being at the end of the central console, and found myself having to look down to find them - not advisable on busy roads.However, on the plus side there is so much to appreciate. The seats in particular are very comfortable and have terrific side support which helps you remain comfortable on long journeys.The increase in size compared with the hatchback doesn't appear emphasised in the back seat area, but the front is satisfyingly airy and spacious. That is where the improved headroom and extra bit of shoulder width is noticeable.The handling is top notch, too. The SW grips as well and corners as nimbly as far sportier cars. It has a refreshingly light touch and is an effortless drive.The 2.0 litre diesel engine under the bonnet of my test vehicle had plenty of torque and power when needed. It's distinctly throaty when first turned on, but generally quiet during journeys. On sunday the auxillary fanbelt slipped off, due to the smaller of the two tensioners becoming somehow wonky. I realised this was no big deal but still had it towed to a local garage to have the pulley and belt replaced, as It was a signifcant amount of work on the driveway (lowering engine etc to get at tensoiner nut!) The guys fixed this issue on monday, but 1 mile down the road from the garage, the car heaved and tried to stop whilst travelling about 40mph, just warming up. This cantinued and I manage to keep the engine running by dipping the clutch and revving the engine. Eventually the car completely stopped, and I had to push it the last 200m home.Obviously I complained to the garage, but they are little more than tyre/exhaust fitters who had done me a favour int he first place. So any ideas on what could be wrong? Currently car will not start at all, although it turns fine ont he starter motor,. My guesses are Fuel pump, fuel injectors, immobilser, HGF (no sign of that), favouring the latter as it really wont start, despite running fine up to that point. thanks in advance Andy Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 14 Jul 2010 09:36 Peugeot 306 1.9DT - 306 DT - will NOT start - dieselnut Sounds very much like an air leak into the fuel supply somewhere. Make sure you have plenty of fuel in the tank. Pump the rubber fuel bulb in the engine compartment until it goes hard, then try to start again. Try fitting a length of clear plastic tube in the fuel feed to the pump to see if there is any air getting in, if the fuel is getting through OK it could be a faulty fuel solonoid in the pump or the power to it could have failed. The most likely cause is a rubber fuel line that has gone hard and fractured, especially if the engine has been moved to replace the belt. The problem is finding it as they dont often leak fuel out, I would check the lines coming off the bulkhead. This was a well known problem on the Xantia. I am concerned that peices of the aux belt may have entered the cam belt cover and forced the cam belt to jump teeth. Is the primer bulb hard. Unfortunately wont get time to look until saturday, crazy week. Old belt was in good nick (I changed it 4 months back) also Cam belt is completely sealed. Fuel filter changed at same time. Already have clear tube going to Injector pump so that will help. You do have to lower the engine to get at the tensioners so a cracked pipe could be likely. Will feedback once Ive found a free hour or two!
