It used TU/XU petrol and XUD diesel engines. The 405 featured Pininfarina styling, characterized by good ride and handling. The 405 was voted European Car of the Year for 1988 by the largest number of votes in the history of the contest. About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide in left-hand and right-hand-drive versions, as a berline (saloon) and break (station wagon). No coupe was offered to the public, unlike the 504 and 406, as only two examples of the purpose-built 405 Turbo-16 (not to be confused with 405 T16) were made. The appearance of the car bears similarities to those of the Alfa Romeo 164, launched the same year and also styled by Pininfarina. Contents 1 Production and markets 2 Design and styling 3 Iranian variants 4 Timeline 4.1 Versions 5 Motorsport 6 Advertising 7 Notes 8 External links [edit] Production and markets About 2.5 million vehicles have been sold worldwide. It slotted into the Peugeot range between the smaller 309 and the larger 505, giving it a firm rival for the Ford Sierra/Ford Mondeo MK1 and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra.[citation needed] The 405 was the last Peugeot vehicle sold in the US, the company withdrawing in 1991.[1] Designed in France, it has been manufactured in: Europe: from 1987 to 1997 at Sochaux (France) and Ryton (UK). Zimbabwe: until 2002, by Quest. Egypt: Wagih Abaza produces the 405, as well as marketing other models. Iran: From mid 2010 it will be produced by Iran Khodro as 405 SLX with air bag & ABS and some other features. Chile: Produced by Franco-Andina in Los Andes, including STI Fase II model. Argentina: Several saloon models, including diesels were built in the Villa Bosch Peugeot facility from 1992 to 1999. In this country the 405 has been an extremely popular car, with total sales of over 500,000 units. Poland: Produced by FSO Lublin. Taiwan: Produced by Yu-Tien Motors from 1989-1995 (Production ceased after bankruptcy). [edit] Design and styling It has been available in left-hand and right-hand-drive versions, as a saloon and station wagon, in front-wheel, and four-wheel drive. Designed by Pininfarina, the 405 shares its platform with the Citroën BX that appeared in 1982, although the physical appearance of the two cars is very different. [edit] Iranian variants Iran Khodro also produces several models derived from the 405. The Peugeot Pars, also known as the Peugeot Persia, is a facelifted 405 with a redesigned front end including clear lamp lenses and a revised rear. The Peugeot RD is a rear wheel drive car which has a 405 body and mechanical parts from the Paykan.[2] Since 2006, it has been sold in certain Middle Eastern markets as the Peugeot ROA.[3] The Samand, which was designed to be a "national car" for Iran, is also based on the 405 platform. It replaced the long-running Paykan which was itself based on the Hillman Hunter, an ancestor (in corporate ownership and model positioning terms) of the 405, having been produced by the Rootes Group and Chrysler UK from 1963 until 1979 - the year that Peugeot purchased Chrysler's European operations. [edit] Timeline 1987: In July, Peugeot unveiled 10 versions of the 405 simultaneously for the 1988 model year. The 405 was available as a 4-door only. Four-cylinder petrol engines included 65, 92, 110, 125, and 160 hp (48, 69, 82, 93, and 119 kW) units. 1988: 70 and 90 hp (52 and 67 kW) diesel engines are added to the range. Estate introduced. 1989: 500,000 vehicles already produced. 1990: In France, the 1 millionth 405 leaves the Sochaux factory. BE1 transmission replaced by the BE3. 1991: Updates to the dashboard, steering wheel, and soundproofing. 1993: Phase 2 model. New boot (trunk) with better ingress, new rear lights and boot design and new dashboard. Launch of the turbocharged, 16-valve, four wheel drive 405 T16. (LHD only) 1995: The 405's replacement, the 406 is introduced. 405 saloon discontinued. Airbag becomes an option on some models, and standard on the Mi16 (except UK) and T16. 1997: Estate discontinued in Europe, marking the end of European production of the 405. The most famous motorsport version of the 405, the rallying 405 Turbo 16 GR, was very different from the road-going 405. It was built in a coupe body style in mid-engine configuration, had constant four wheel drive with electronically-adjustable center differential like the 205 T16, as it was based on the same technology. Only two examples were made, one raced hill climbs and the other competed in the Paris-Dakar rally. Today, one is in the official Peugeot museum, and the other is in a private collection. 1988: Finnish driver Ari Vatanen set a new record in the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb (an award winning film of the drive titled Climb Dance was made by Jean Louis Mourey). Kankkunen and Piironen win the Paris-Dakar Rally in the 405 T16 GR. 1989: Victory in the Paris-Dakar rally by the Vatanen-Ickx team in a 405 T16 GR. 1990: Victory in the Paris-Dakar rally by the Vatanen-Berglund team in a 405 T16 GR. Racing 405s much closer in specification to the road-going models were campaigned for several years in European touring car racing during the early to mid 1990s, most notably in the British Touring Car Championship and the French Supertourisme Championship. In Britain, the 405 did not achieve much success, but the car won the French series in both 1994 and 1995, in the hands of Laurent Aïello. [edit] Advertising A famous 1989 British television advertisement for the 405 featured a version of the Berlin hit record Take My Breath Away, playing as a 405 GTX sped through exploding fields of fire. This advertisement was reworked in 1990 and again in early 1991. [edit] Notes ^ "Peugeot and Sterling pull out of the U.S - Brief Article". findarticles.com. While the 90X complies with the new ACO's 2011 regulations, it still requires some considerable amount of work to be done to be ready for 2011. So what's changed? A curvier windscreen and slight change to the nose but the biggest changes are the new fin leading from the cockpit to the rear spoiler, aimed to offer more down force and avoid flipping in the case of a high speed crash. The exhausts now appear out the top rear deck instead of the side. 'We are still exploring several options with regard to the engine and technology we will use,' points out Bruno Famin, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport. 'Work on the engine's development is ongoing. Endurance racing is an ideal proving ground to provide us with the opportunity to showcase all the brand's technologies.' tells Bruno Famin, the technical Director of Peugeot Sport. 1 Rate this article... 1 2 3 4 5 Average rating: 2.5 (9 votes) Discuss this Add your comment Sign in You must be signed in to submit a comment. And who knows, maybe with the new regulations which will try to reign in the diesels' advantage Aston Martin and their LMP1 machine might have a shot at the title too. A 3 way fight for the title! Peugeot Sport’s principal mission accomplished Having been kept secret in Peugeot Sport’s factory in Vélizy, near Paris, the team’s new endurance challenger – known under the codename 90X – has been out for its first track test. “Our intention was to take it out onto a track before the end of the year,” says Peugeot Sport Director Olivier Quesnel. “I am pleased to report that we have now done that. Even so, there is still a long way to go and a considerable amount of work to be done as we prepare for 2011.” The 90X’s technical characteristics The 90X complies with the ACO’s 2011 regulations, and notably incorporates a shark fin appendix on the engine cover. This new feature is designed to prevent the car from going airborne in the case of a high-speed spin. As it did for the 908 HDi FAP, Peugeot Sport has opted for a closed cockpit, while the car meets the mandatory 900kg weight requirement. “We are still exploring several options with regard to the engine and technology we will use,” points out Bruno Famin, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport. “Work on the engine’s development is ongoing. Endurance racing is a proving ground that provides us with an opportunity to showcase all the brand’s technologies.” Discussion 19 comments for “Peugeot 90X breaks cover” Looks very evolutionary to me, not exactly a radical new design. Even seems to include an old 905 engine intake on the roof! Can’t say I’m ever going to like the look of the new breed of prototypes with that ugly great fin down the back At least it’s a coupé. Posted by Lawrence Sims | October 30, 2010, 10:28 I’d rather see a number of cars flip over during a season than these truly ridiculous shark fins… Posted by Robert | October 30, 2010, 12:57 GYYYYYAAHHHHH! I agree Robert that shark fin’s an eyesore no doubt. RIP IT OFF! Posted by Matty Embry | October 30, 2010, 14:17 HORRID springs to mind! It’s something we’re gonna have to get used to by the looks of it though. Anyhow, what’s the point in these fins? I mean, isn’t speed the real issue to deal with NOT lifting? Posted by Tommy | October 30, 2010, 16:11 The fin makes even less sense considering that not a single LeMans prototype had flip over on it’s own in two years, thanks to the regulations that were put in place in 2009. Posted by Tonio31 | October 30, 2010, 16:30 @Tonio31 Benoit Treluyer got sideways in his Pescarolo-entered 908 at Le Mans 2009. The car got airborne and rolled (into a small ball). Posted by Pandamasque | October 30, 2010, 16:39 You can clearly see that the 90X is nothing more than a 908 with a couple of new bits all in black carbonfibre: -New SharkFin -New Endplate -New vanes on the sideponts. -New swingneck rear wing. I would had hoped for more coming from a Manufacturer… I know their budget is not that great and that all the money would have to be employed on the engine side. They still haven´t build the hydrid-e system so… Posted by nossense | October 30, 2010, 17:21 I forgot: -New Central Air Intake for the engine´s turbo inlet. Posted by nossense | October 30, 2010, 17:23 That fin is just a quickly-built thing to test the new regulations – I’m sure it will look better integrated into the car’s shape in the final design. It will give better aerodynamic stability and more space for advertising… Posted by kw | October 30, 2010, 19:50 something else for the oil and flames to spray up when their engines expire at le mans next year. Posted by webby | October 30, 2010, 20:47 @Pandamasque Did it flip on its own, or did it hit something first? Posted by Tonio31 | October 31, 2010, 3:16 @kw I agree, there’s no way they’re going to leave it that color. They will probably incorporate it into the 2011 livery, as this car still has the 2010 livery, which obviously didn’t include the fin. Posted by SchellZ | October 31, 2010, 6:47 There’s no lip on the fin, why would it do anything to stop a sideways flip? I would’ve thought the engine intake over the cockpit would do an ok job, it’s got a little rut there to trap air. I’d say that’s a bollock excuse at saying – we’re trying to implement this horrible looking aero device, but if we say it’s for safety everyone will be fine with it. But agree – all F1′d out and in Pug colours it won’t look that bad – I think the Renault F1 car is perhaps the most gorgeous car ever, it has one. Posted by Cameron | October 31, 2010, 6:48 The Peugeot 90X practicallylooks the same as the last 5 years… LOL I’m not sure but maybe the open cocpit prototypes may not have the shark fin! Well, the LOLA open cocpit prototope has one on it! Lets hope Audi Is a Bi-Turbo Diesel-Hybrid engine. I am hoping Aud Is overall lighter in weight, has the most amount of power allowed given and since there is no limit on Torque, I hope Audi has a significant amont more orque that Peugeot! Who know, The New Audi is based off the 2010-spec. Audi R15 PLUS TDI… I just hope the Audi is a Bi-Turbo Diesel-Hybrid engine and an open cocpit and more efficient than the 90X. maybe laping it an extra lap or 2 the the90X! Does anybody know if Audi will show off their Prototype b4 the end of this year!?? Posted by Kris | November 2, 2010, 15:54 Formula one cars used to look nice until they got the shark fins. Then endurance racing was the only source of beautiful cars. Now that is gone because of the chark fin. Posted by Matt | November 3, 2010, 6:28 @Kris Don’t know when they’re releasing it, but I’ve heard the new Audi will be a closed top. Also, all prototypes, open or closed top, must have the shark fin. Posted by SchellZ | November 3, 2010, 7:40 I dont see why the shark fin has to look like that why cant they do what the F1 cars do and mould it up into the rear wing? Posted by Blake Robins | November 3, 2010, 9:37 How many sportscar prototypes flipped in 2010? As far as I can tell, none! Lets do away with this wing, it literally serves no purpose that I can see. It costs money to develope, it makes the cars look ugly, and it only helps safety in an area that was totally safe before! Unless its there for advertising space it should be removed, and if it is there for ads then thats a sad statement on sportscars! Posted by William Mound | November 5, 2010, 19:47 I hope those fin things break off during the first 5 laps of the races…and not have to replace the engine cover… Posted by Johhny | November 16, 2010, 9:30 Post a comment Name * E-mail * Web site Comment Your comments may be held for moderation. "Unblock diesel filter" shows every now and again. Sometimes the drivers door wont open so have to keep manually locking and unlocking until it works. Report this review I write this having just returned from a long night trying to have my failed 307 towed. On this ocassion the electronic 'features' of the car decided to all fail at the same time. Yes, that means they all work but not together. So it wont start, select neutral (therefore cannot be towed!) I can't open the rear door (it is an electronic switch) the wipers wont stop wiping, the doors will not lock. It is basically a boat anchor sitting in a public car park. The problems we have had led us to get shot before anything else went wrong. The good points are the handling, engine and MPG, this was the 6th Peugeot we've had between us and will most likely be the last one despite the looks of the 407. Coinciding with the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the Peugeot ECO CUP was designed to see if four different standard Peugeot HDi diesel models in the hands of everyday drivers could deliver fuel economy to match or beat the official government fuel economy figures. The result? They were not so much matched as shattered. The best return was a fraction shy of 90mpg and, what is more, this wasn’t in a tiny city car, hybrid or specially adapted vehicle. It was in a standard production Peugeot 5-door 308 HDi 110 model, driven over 1000kms of French and Swiss roads in heavy wintery conditions. Even Peugeot’s new 7-seat 5008 MPV returned economy figures of nearly 85mpg. Average fuel consumption achieved by the four winning drivers: Peugeot 308 HDi FAP 110 – 89.95 mpg Peugeot 207 HDi 90 – 87.10 mpg Peugeot 5008 HDi FAP 110 – 84.77 mpg Peugeot 3008 HDi FAP 110 – 79.10 mpg Jon Goodman, Managing Director of Peugeot UK, said: “This project has proven two things; that there are a lot of people out there interested in doing their bit for the planet by stretching fuel economy to the max; and that this can be achieved in standard Peugeot diesel cars, with our new 5008 7-seater MPV nearly cracking 85mpg and our 308 5-door family hatch pushing 90mpg. This is a great reminder that, in this dynamic and technology-obsessed industry, genuine environmentally friendly motoring is available for the masses right now.” More at Peugeot Next Steps Car Insurance Car Finance Car Warranty Reliability Index Get a vehicle check Honest John's Car Buying Advice Get the low-down on how to buy and sell cars the hassle-free way Related News & Road Tests Review: Peugeot 308 2007 Five-star crash test rating.
