Steve Walker ReportsPeugeots 206 just keeps on selling. Its one of the UKs best selling cars for people spending their own money and one of the reasons why is the continual stream of value for money models, typified by the Zest 3 versions we look at here. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value The 206 Zest 3 is a step up from the entry-level Independence and S derivatives that prop up the everyday 206 range. At this level buying decisions are very much based on price and what equipment you get for your money so its in these areas that the Zest 3 has been designed to shine. Priced from £7,995, it costs less than the equivalent S model but (on all but 1.1-litre variants) offers air conditioning as standard. Theres now a choice of 1.1 and 1.4-litre petrol units, plus the frugal 1.4-litre HDi diesel, with the option of three or five-door bodystyles. The 1.4 costs from £8,495 and the diesel from £9,495. Opt for five rather than three doors and theres a £600 premium. Either way, you get ABS with Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) as standard. In terms of value its hard to fault the Zest. As weve said, a key area where the 206 Zest 3 differs from the S on which it is based is in the choice of engines on offer. The only advantage we can see in going for S-spec is that it gives you the option, unlike the Zest 3, of going for an automatic or the more powerful 90bhp 2.0-litre HDi diesel. Otherwise, Zest 3 is the way to go. The dilemma over whether to go for 1.1 or 1.4-litre 8-valve power comes down to how much you are willing to pay to knock a couple of seconds off your cars sprint to 60mph and add a few mph to its top speed. The 60bhp 1.1-litre car takes a rather laborious 15.1 seconds to reach 60mph topping out at 98mph. On the other hand, the 75bhp 1. 4-litre speeds things up enough to deliver a 12.2s 0-60mph dash and a 107mph top speed. Fuel economy is similar whichever lump you choose but 1.4s 44. 8mpg on the combined cycle is duly topped by the 45.6mpg available from the 1.1-litre. Of course, both are trounced by the 1. 4 HDi diesel versions 78.5mpg extra urban combined figure. Neither unit endows the 206 Zest 3 with what youd term eyeball-popping performance but any perceived lack of power is well compensated for by the sharp handling dynamics common to all 206 models. There is body roll through the bends and the steering can be a little light but it remains amongst the best handling superminis around. "In terms of value its hard to fault the 206 Zest 3"Over £630 million was spent in creating the 206 platform, designed to support not only the three and five-door hatches offered in Zest 3 form but also the Coupe/Cabrio model and SW estate. Step inside though, and it's just like every other Peugeot you've ever sat in. Though the dark plastics used are rather sombre, the materials chosen are light and attractive. You wouldn't mistake this for an up-market saloon but it's an environment you'd be quite happy with, even on a long journey. Rear seat accommodation isn't one of the 206's strongpoints - but then you could say the same about most of the other cars in this sector. At least the boot is a reasonable size, thanks to compact rear suspension. There are nice touches like the front passenger seat cushion, which flips forward to reveal a storage space within the seat's structure. Alternatively, the seat's backrest can be folded flat for really long loads. As for the styling, well, make up your own mind; either way, you're probably used to it by now. My only comments are practical ones; the rear doors could be larger and the top of the tailgate is so low that it slightly cuts into the interior mirror's field of view. I'd also add, however, that the prominent nose looks just great bearing down on you from behind. The 206 has also been treated to a mild facelift in recent years which runs to the tune of a honeycomb grille, the obligatory clear headlight lenses and a bigger chromed Peugeot lion badge on the back. Uniform coloured rear light lenses are also introduced. On the road, it's much as you might expect, given the impressive abilities of other cars from the company's stable. Class-leading attributes include the slick gearchange and the absorbent suspension. And handling? Well, unlike its predecessor, the 206 advances the science no further in this respect - the class standard is already too good for that. Nor, unlike the 205, is it the kind of car that enthusiasts will find excuses to drive. The steering is a little light and the body roll a little too pronounced. Priced below the S but with demonstrably higher equipment levels, the Zest 3 takes over an important position in the bargain basement of the 206 range. By now, most buyers should be fairly certain of what theyre getting with the 206. The car has been around for what seems like eons but its popularity shows little sign of waning and the Zest 3 certainly shouldnt do those sales figures any harm.
