Peugeots 206 Sport 2.0 HDi 90 Could Suit. Jonathan Crouch Checks It OutWere looking here at the big-diesel-in-small-car approach in this case typified by Peugeots 206 Sport 2.0 HDi 90.This car gets the same 90bhp high-pressure direct injection engine also used to good effect in the larger 307 models. Thus equipped, a 206 Sport HDi 90 has sufficient performance to match its petrol 1.6 16V Sport equivalent. If you want more, theres a 110bhp 1. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value 6-litre HDi diesel unit priced in Sport form from £11,495. Even in the 90bhp model however, sixty is reached from rest in 12 seconds on the way to a top speed of 112mph and theres enough mid-range urge to have the petrol 2.0 GTi watching its back. Economy of this technically advanced two-litre engine is even better than the old 1. 9-litre diesel so you can expect to average 56.5mpg. The sporting Sport HDi comes in three and five-door hatch guises and you get a generous specification. Features include power steering, driver and passenger SMART airbags, remote central locking, electric front windows, a stereo radio/mono CD player, sports front seats, air-conditioning, a full body-coloured exterior, 15" alloy wheels, a trip computer with external temperature gauge, front fog lights and aluminium interior detailing. Plus theres the option of leather trim and a fully-integrated satellite-navigation system if you can stretch to it. Mind you, if you could afford that kind of thing, youd have probably bought the GTi. On the road, it's much as you might expect, given the impressive abilities of other cars from the company's stable. Class-leading attributes include the slick gearchange and the absorbent suspension. And handling? Well, unlike its predecessor, the 206 advances the science no further in this respect - the class standard is already too good for that. Nor, unlike the 205, is it the kind of car that enthusiasts will find excuses to drive. The power steering is a little light, the body roll a little too pronounced and the low-speed ride rather lumpy. Having said that, traction is excellent and it's possible to get into a fast, fluid driving rhythm that few other cars could sustain."theres enough mid-range urge to have the petrol 2.0 GTi watching its back."But what exactly is HDi? Well, without going too deeply into the technicalities, its Peugeots interpretation of the hi-tech Common Rail approach to diesel technology. This approach sees fuel squirted directly into the cylinders from a single pipe (the 'common rail') rather than through individual lines. This cleaner, quieter process means a more efficient use of fuel, which in turn leads to better performance and lower fuel consumption. Peugeot would like you to think of it as the diesel engine that performs like a petrol: certainly at speed, you wouldn't be able to tell what was under the bonnet. On the road, it is much as you might expect, given the impressive abilities of other cars from the company's stable. The gearchange throw is rather long but the action is reassuringly precise and the brakes instil a good deal of confidence too. Some drivers may not get along with the rather chubby windscreen pillars and the plastics quality of the interior isnt the best in class. Aside from that theres little to grouse about. The handling? Well, unlike its predecessor, the 206 advances the science no further in this respect - the class standard is already too good for that. Nor, unlike the 205, is it the kind of car that enthusiasts will find excuses to drive. The power steering is a little light and the body roll a little too pronounced to really warrant that Sport badge. Although the 206 is no longer in the first flush of youth, there are still some neat details: a switch to disable the front passenger airbag (where fitted) for baby seats. Then there's the front passenger seat cushion, which flips forward to reveal a storage space within the seat's structure. Alternatively, the seat's backrest can be folded flat for really long loads. Step inside and it's just like every other Peugeot you've ever sat in. Though the dark plastics used are rather sombre, the upholstery materials are colourful and attractive. You wouldn't mistake this for an up-market saloon but it's an environment you'd be quite happy with, even on a long journey. The 206 has been treated to a mild facelift which runs to the tune of a honeycomb grille, the obligatory clear headlight lenses and a bigger chromed Peugeot lion badge on the back. Uniform coloured rear light lenses are also introduced. In summary, the 206 Sport 2. 0 HDi 90 is a decent package one that combines petrol 1.6 performance with outstanding economy.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Peugeot 206 Sport HDi PRICE: £10,695-£11,295 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 7 CO2 EMISSIONS: 144g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 12.0s / Max Speed 112mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban) 42.8mpg / (extra urban) 68.9mpg/ (combined) 56.5mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front airbags, ABS WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height mm 3835/1652/1432 Send by Messenger Email this article Print More news and reviews from Peugeot

By Andy EnrightMuch as some of us would like a Peugeot 206GTi, the upfront price, the insurance rating and the ongoing fuel bills may well act as a significant deterrent. Hence the appeal of Peugeots recently upgraded 206 Sport range, which now comes with a selection of more desirable engine options.Although one shouldnt read too much into Peugeots claim that the 206 Sport is borne from their three consecutive World Rally Championships, theres no doubt that it is a fun and tidy handler. Most will be more concerned about the cars cosmetics. Based on the old S model, the Sport features includes power steering, driver and passenger SMART airbags, remote central locking, electric front windows, a stereo radio/mono CD player, sports front seats, air-conditioning, a full body-coloured exterior, 14" or 15" alloy wheels (depending on model), a trip computer with external temperature gauge, front fog lights and aluminium interior detailing. Two body styles with three or five doors are available and theres now a choice of three petrol engines and two diesel engine options. Petrol buyers get to select from either a 1.4-litre 16v entry-level powerplant priced from £10,195 or the 1. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value 6-litre 16v model priced from £10,545. With 90bhp on tap, the 1.4-litre sixteen-valve engine feels pleasantly peppy, the variable valve timing giving decent low end torque and a surprising amount of punch at higher revs. This engine is as powerful as the more expensive 1. 6-litre petrol powerplant and is a fair degree lighter. The sixteen-valve cylinder head frees up another 15bhp over the old 8v 1.4-litre. Sixty arrives in 10. 7 seconds on the way to a top end of 111mph. Fuel economy is predictably good, the three-door Sport returning figures of 46.3mpg on the combined cycle with an urban showing of 34.4mpg and extra urban of 57. 6mpg. Emissions figures open at 145g/km for the three door model."As long as you dont take the 206 Sport too seriously, you should both get along fine"If saving on fuel and lowering your emissions is a priority, theres really only one way to go and thats in the direction of the HDi diesel. The HDi 110bhp version, from £11,545, uses a 110bhp 1.6-litre diesel engine. Sixty is reached from rest in under 10 seconds on the way to a top speed of 118mph and theres enough mid-range urge to have the petrol 2. 0 GTi watching its back. Economy of this technically advanced engine is top notch, you can expect to average 59mpg. But what exactly is HDi? Well, without going too deeply into the technicalities, its Peugeots interpretation of the hi-tech Common Rail approach to diesel technology. This approach sees fuel squirted directly into the cylinders from a single pipe (the 'common rail') rather than through individual lines. Uniform coloured rear light lenses are also introduced. As long as youre not expecting lowered suspension, beefed up brakes and a whole host of interior upgrades like sports seats and leather trim, the Peugeot 206 Sport shouldnt disappoint. Its not what youd even dub a warm hatch but the basic 206 shape sill looks pert after all these years and the Sports alloy wheels and aggressive front end give it a bit of visual pizzazz. Although the quote from your insurance company may well prove the high point of 206 Sport ownership, many will love its blend of sassy styling, affordability and tried and tested engineering.FACTS AT A GLANCE CAR: Peugeot 206 Sport range PRICES: £10,195 - £12,345 - on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 3-5 CO2 EMISSIONS: 136-149g/km PERFORMANCE: [1.4] 0-60mph 10.7s / Max Speed 111mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: [1.4] (combined) 46.3mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin airbags, ABS, seatbelt pretensioners WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Heightmm 3835/1652/1432 Send by Messenger Email this article Print More news and reviews from Peugeot

Back in the '80s, the French company developed a strongly performing 205 by substituting a 1.8 diesel for the existing petrol engine. He stops at the pump and fills up...He goes to pay.It suddenly dawns on you with great distress....Your friends has just put 40 litres of DIESEL in his nice shiny new 206!That was the situation that hit me when I wrote this opinion some 18 months ago.But it was ok. It was not a GTi. It was a HDi.This means that just because it looks like fish, swims like a fish, acts like a fish, does not mean its a fish! The HDi comes with all of the added extras of the GTi such as bodykit, alloys, interior, creature comforts but lacks the out and out grunt of the powerful GTi.Instead you have one of the grumbly, if excellently designed Diesel powerplants that are one of Peugeot's strong points.Obviously the performance does not rival the GTi stinking Hot hatch but it is a luke warm equivalent. Im not sure that peugeot should even have tried to bring out a car under the 20# genre after their exceedingly popular 205 model but, they did anyway and also brought their successful diesel along with it!The Americans have a recipe for producing a car with decent performance and plenty of mid-range "VROOM". Give it loads of grunt and watch it fly! They work on the principle of 'there is nothing like cubic inches for power' and drop in the biggest engine that will fit under the bonnet. That approach has also been used to excellent effect by Peugeot here in Europe when creating the diesel versions of its small hatchbacks. Back in the '80s, the French company developed a strongly performing 205 by substituting a 1.8 diesel for the existing petrol engine. When they added a turbocharger a few years later, the resulting 205 D Turbo was the closest you could get to a 'diesel 205 GTi'. They used this in the highly successful 306 too.The 206, spiritual successor to the 205, has also had the BIG DIESEL treatment. When it was launched late in 1998, it was offered with only a 1.9-litre 70bhp normally-aspirated diesel which delivered excellent economy, around 50mpg . The problem was it was DOG SLOW! 0-60mph acceleration took 16.1 seconds and top speed of 100mph .Hence the need for a faster diesel, satisfied by the 2.0-litre HDi engine. The sporty D Turbo variant is a relly good car, but the same powerplant is also offered on a range of other three and five-door 206 models. This is the same 90bhp high pressure direct injection engine also used to good effect in the 306 and 406. Thus equipped, a 206 HDi D Turbo has a matching performance to to rival the existing 1.6 XS petrol version. 0-60 can no be reached in 12 seconds on the way to a top speed of 112mph and there's enough mid-range urge to have the petrol 2.0 GTi watching its back. Economy of this technically advanced two-litre engine is even better than the 1.9-litre diesel (which continues), so you can expect to average 56.5mpg.Ride quality is excellent. My mate often tells me it is brilliant on the motorway but im yet to be convinced. The front dampers and anti-roll bar have been uprated to compensate for the diesel engine's slight extra weight and engine noise has been well suppressed by revised engine mountings and extra sound absorbing panels under the bonnet. The extra stiffnes leads to a harder ride than the Petrol and of course, not as comfortable. The sporting D Turbo comes only as a three-door with a generous specification. The 206 GTi comes in both 3 and 5 door but, who wants a 5 door GTi?The body kit comes with a deeper front spoiler with fog lamps, tasty side skirts and a boot spoiler. Inside you get sports front seats, air conditioning (or a sunroof), remote central locking with alarm and deadlocks plus power front windows, all for £13,000. In the cockpit, the creature comforts include:a driver's airbag, a height-adjustable steering column, power steering, an RDS stereo with driver remote control, engine immobiliser tinted glass. Some good safety features (particularly for carrying baby) include a switch to disable the front passenger airbag (where fitted) for baby seats. Then there's the front passenger seat cushion, which flips forward to reveal a storage space within the seat's structure.Alternatively, the seat's backrest can be folded flat for really long loads.Remember it is only a Peugeot. I alway liken their interiors to the bland sight of my old Primera. Bland and plasticy. The upholstery materials are colourful and attractive. Rear seat accommodation isn't one of the 206's strongpoints. Being a 3 door, back seat drivers are not really catered for.At least the boot is a reasonable size, thanks to compact rear suspension. On the road, it's much as you might expect, given the impressive abilities of other cars from the company's stable. Unlike the 205, is it the kind of car that enthusiasts will not find excuses to drive. You cannot beat that for pure class. In summary, the HDi Peugeot 206 diesel Is a great car to drive if you want to be a pretender. I recommend it to kit car owners. The car has remote central locking and an alarm, which isn't standard on all models, so check that yours has. Performance: The 2 litre diesel engine is another boon, lots of low down power ......Acceleration from standing is good and when the turbo kicks in it flies along. 0-60 is around 13 seconds and top speed 113 but it's between 35-80 where the car excels. If you thought that diesels were sluggish think again.
